Breakfast in the hotel followed by a full day of city sightseeing.  Highlights include the central city, Auckland harbour and waterfront including Mission Bay, Bastion Point, and historic Parnell.  Visit the highly rated Auckland Museum which has an excellent exhibit of Polynesian artifects.  Drive across the Auckland Harbour Bridge to the North Shore and the quant village of Devonport.  Here there is the option of returning to the city by ferry across the Waitemata Harbour. (extra cost)

Day 3 – Thursday 25 January 2018 (B, D) Waitakere Ranges

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel this morning before boarding the coach to travel out to west Auckland.  Today you will travel through the lovely Waitakere Ranges.  The Ranges are home to a unique rainforest and wetland ecosystem with native plant and bird life.  The rugged landscape with its ocean and pounding surf, black sand beaches, and panoramic views are a photographer’s delight.  The scenic drive along the top of the Waitakere Ranges gives great views of Auckland City and passes through the 10,000 hectare Centennial Memorial Park with 200 km of beautiful native-bush walking and hiking tracks.  The headland and offshore islands are home to white-fronted terns and the northernmost mainland shelters breeding colonies of gannets.  Since approximately 1975, these birds began nesting on the cliffs of Muriwai due to overcrowding on the offshore islands – today they number almost one thousand.  Watch these birds as they dive-bomb into the sea for food and interact with each other.  Then travel along the scenic West Coast Wine Trail stopping at boutique wineries with the option to sample some of the excellent estate wines that are produced in this region.

Enjoy your own private outdoor space with a table, two chairs, and a relaxing view of the inspiring scenery surrounding you. It’s also perfect to enjoy cocktails before dinner or a leisurely breakfast.

Day 5 – Saturday 27 January 2018 (B, L, D) Bay of Islands, New Zealand

Enjoy a delicious breakfast on board Sun Princess this morning followed by the option to go ashore and explore New Zealand’s Bay of Islands (own expense). The Bay of Islands offers more than broad vistas of sea and sky, more than beaches, boating, and fabulous water sports. The Bay is the birthplace of modern New Zealand. Here the Treaty of Waitangi was signed, establishing British rule and granting the native inhabitants equal status. Rich in legend and mystery, the Bay of Islands has age-old ties to the Maori and to whalers, missionaries and New Zealand's early settlers.

The Bay of Islands has lured explorers for countless centuries. The Maori say that Kupe, the great Polynesian adventurer, came here in the 10th century. Captain Cook anchored offshore in 1769, followed by assorted brigands, traders, colonists and missionaries.
